» Homeowner Cabinet Tips & Definitions

It is important for homeowners to understand the basic terminologies used in the cabinet industry. We hope that the following definition list is helpful to you:

Cabinet Repairs - A term used when you need items such as door hinges or drawer rollers replaced. Typically this work is done by a handyman or carpenter.

Cabinet Refinishing - Typically this means that cabinets are sanded and re-stained or repainted. A painter will help you with this type of project.

Cabinet Refacing - when the doors of cabinets and drawers are removed and replaced with new material. Often a less expensive way to remodel your cabinets. There are companies, such as Sears, that specialize in cabinet refacing.

Cabinet Installation - a term used for the final step of the cabinet construction process. It is when finished cabinets are placed into their final place. Typically, the cabinets have already been stained or painted by the time they are installed. Installation is often performed by trained handymen and carpenters.

Manufactured Cabinets - these are cabinets that you typically pick out at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. They have standard sizes and shapes. Purchasing manufactured cabinets can often result in lower project costs.

Cabinet Suppliers - a cabinet supplier is typically a company that represents several types of manufactured cabinets. They have showrooms where you can review cabinet types. These suppliers typically have contractors they refer you to for cabinet installation.

Custom Cabinets - custom cabinets are built typically by local cabinet makers and contractors but are also built by large cabinetmakers as well. When you purchase custom cabinets, the style, size, and colors typically meet your exact specifications. You are more in control. Custom cabinets often cost a bit more than manufactured cabinets.

Wall Units - wall units are cabinets that are built directly into your wall. Typically they are bookshelves or entertainment centers.

Built-in Cabinets & Furniture - built in cabinets are similar to wall units. They are typically custom built to your specifications and then fixed into place (such as an island in the middle of your kitchen, cabinets on your wall, or a window seat.

Custom Furniture - this term is typically used to describe furniture and cabinets that are built to be free standing, movable furniture. There are special carpenters and furniture makers that  do this kind of work.
