Geotechnical challenges included unsuitable expansive soils, capacities of drilled or driven piles, soil bearing values for shallow foundations, settlement of shallow foundations, shallow groundwater, liquefaction potential, slope stability, soil percolation/permeability, and mass grading. Project management challenges included coordination among biologists, archeologists, ordnance technician, and drilling crew in a multi-thousand acre area to meet environmental and cultural permit requirement in a high desert area; conducting field work in high-voltage substations; coordination of putting together statement-of-qualification package for design-build projects, coordinating and overseeing field exploration in high heat and freezing temperatures while emphasizing safety. Project experience also included preparation of reports under purview of agencies, like Office of Statewide Planning and Development (OSHPD), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), local governments, California Energy Commission (CEC).
